"Normal"

Friday July 30, 2010

I dropped Oliver off at Mom & Dad Funk's so that I could go to the 4H Fair & watch the kids I nanny show their pigs. I learned a great deal about all the logistics of the pig show, lets just say I would ONLY go again because I love them so much :0)

Anyways, I head back to the Funk's to pick Oliver up b/c he has his 9 mon. check up at 2:00. He wakes up late & so I ask if we can just stay for lunch & then head straight to the apt. Mom says yes. As we are sitting their eating lunch (Oliver, Mom & myself) I am talking to her about the apt. and how I just know he has gained so much weight & I am so excited to go. I told her that I just know he is going to be in the 10th percentile, we both kind of chuckle knowing that, that won't happen & I say 100% seriously, "I just hope he is over 1st percentile"

So, to hopefully make a long story short. We go to the doc. the nurse weighs him & it says 14 lbs 9 oz!!! I am SHOCKED! I picked him up sadly & just held him, he is still at .05% which means 99.5% of kids his age weigh more than he does :0( and most of those kids are probably failure to thrive kids. Anyways, the doc. comes in & talks to me, he says he is not worried b/c Oliver is very healthy & no lagging in anyway other than weight. He tells me not to worry & if he is still this small at 1 yr. we will get blood work & I said "ok" then he looked at his charts (on the computer of course), looked at me and said why don't we just get the blood work today :0(

I was so scared, nervous & sad for my little boy. First they strapped a bag to his weenie to get a urine sample, he hated it. Then we went to get the blood work, he had to be strapped down on a little baby straight board & he screamed the whole time. Before hand I said I will just wait over here (because I didn't want to see him suffer) as soon as I heard him whimper I knew he needed me more than I needed my own comfort so I watched, I hated it! We checked for pee, nothing. So we went to the waiting room had milk & played with toys & flirted with old ladies. The nurse came back again & so we checked for pee, YAY! He peed this meant I didn't have to deal with it at home.

We left. I called Dusty & I cried. Alyssa called & I cried. Called my Mom & cried. Asked for prayers as we await the answer to the questions I constantly get asked, "He is so small! Is he sick? no. Oh he was a preemie? no. OH! Is he ok? Yes!"

I felt a peace early Friday evening that He was fine no matter what the results showed. I trusted God & tried not to think about it again (I did VERY good).

8:45 - Phone rings. Hello? Hi, is this Oliver's Mom? Yes it is :0) This is the nurse calling with his results, they all came back "NORMAL". So that means nothing is wrong? That's Right. Okay, Thanks for calling, Have a great day! bye. bye bye.

Such sweet sweet words. Normal.

YAY! My little boy is healthy 100% not .05% but 100% So for all you skeptical people out there who think something must be wrong, well there is not so deal with it, I am sorry my baby does not have chub but that doesn't mean he is sick. :0)

Praising Jesus for my little miracle Oliver!

He has turned into quite the climber!! (esp. when he wants something!!)

  1. Having had a niece and a nephew be tiny in bone structure, weight and height....I don't even question it. Oliver looks, acts and moves totally normal. His daddy is small bone structure. Katie was not on the chart at all her first 9 months. She made it at a year, but that was in weight only....height still wasn't on. I was thankful my doctor saw a growth pattern that was consistently moving forward and assured me it was just fine.

Test on babies is simply awful....you have my complete sympathy.....how horrible for both of you....however, how awesome the results!!! Thank you Jesus!!

  3. I have a niece in CO. She is small also. She just turned two. They did the same test on her. They had a hard time getting a urine sample, because she is a girl. Is is normal also. She is a picky eater, but very smart and active. My sister gets comments all the time about my nieces size. Oliver and my niece are just the way God wants them to be.
